Whitman College’s Summer Read program chose Reservation Blues by Sherman Alexie for incoming students to read in 2014. Reservation Blues, Alexie’s first novel and winner of the American Book Award and the Murray Morgan Prize, follows the story of an all-Indian rock band from the Spokane Indian Reservation. Every fall, Penrose Library features an exhibit about the Summer Read book in our main floor display case. This year’s exhibit, curated by Adrienne Beebe ’15, includes such items as a blues guitar, a Plains Indian flute, and several of Alexie’s novels. It also includes unique artist’s book – printed at Whitman – containing an Alexie poem titled seven mourning songs for the cedar flute I have yet to learn to play.
